A joint statement from your Eltham Town and Avery Hill Labour Councillors; Lauren Dingsdale and Sammy Backon, and Cllr Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities:
It is a vast understatement to say we are hugely disappointed the Conservative Government has chosen not to back Royal Greenwich’s bid to restore the Avery Hill Winter Garden to its former glory, through its Levelling Up Fund.
Disappointed, but not surprised, as the way the Levelling Up Fund is being applied, pits communities against communities. Funding for our local communities should not be a contest, rather we need to listen to our local communities and empower councils to allocate funding to local areas.
Only a Labour Government can change this.
Labour will end the absurdity of communities likes ours having to go cap in hand, waiting on the generosity and whim of a Whitehall mandarin. Labour will oversee the biggest ever transfer of power out of Westminster through the Take Back Control Act, so local leaders can harness the skills and assets in areas like Eltham to deliver growth, prosperity and opportunity for all.
Moving forward we will now work closely with the Council’s political leadership and our local community to consider our options as to how we can find a way forward.
